Web Literacy

Carol and I spent 45 minutes talking to a group of teachers at the Illinois Reading Conference today. They were very gracious and seemed to soak up the information. Here is our presentation (I published it to SplashCast): Presentation

Much of what I shared is from Alan November – amazing stuff that is so useful [...]

Great class!

Congratulations to the students in C&I 579!
They are in the Web 2.0 trenches where I’m dragging them through the mud of blogging, wiki-ing, podcasting, social bookmarking, and more. We’re looking at as many tools as we can and trying to figure out how they fit into educational settings.
It’s not a neat, clean process [...]

Spring break?

Well, I really didn’t have any sights on taking time off at the beach somewhere … but I also wasn’t ready to work harder than normal.

This week I finished the PPT for our talk at the Illinois Reading Conference. I’ll be focusing on Internet literacy after Carol Owles sets the stage with critical literacy theory. [...]

Ok, as promised

The video from yesterday’s post was made by San Fernando High School graduates. As you can see from the subtitles they are attending some very prestigious schools. You can also hear how disappointed they are in the pedagogy they have found at their colleges.
The true power in the video is in more than the words [...]

What do you think?

I’ve been talking a lot, in the blog and with folks f2f, about the need for teachers and faculty to increase student engagement by taking advantage of all the social networking tools and allowing students to be responsible for their own learning – teachers become experts in guiding rather than shoveling content.
Well here’s something to [...]

Out and About for the Next Month

Well, the traveling has begun. After 4 days in St. Charles – a great time was had by all – I’m home for a week and then off to Springfield. Carol Owles and I are presenting on web literacy. She will be doing the critical literacy theory part and I will be talking about knowing [...]

Entry #6 – IL-TCE

Jason Ohler
I thought I would try sharing my notes from Jason’s presentation. Beware: these are the interpretations and may be Toledoized – his words are in quotes.
Suggestions for making technology use and integration smoother:

“Don’t fear 10 year olds who know more than you; deputize them” … (they see technology as “intelligent furniture”)
“be kind to your [...]

Entry #5 – IL-TCE

David Pogue
Whew! The more I see and hear these professional speakers, I wonder where they get the energy and all the information. Now the information glut makes sense coming from David Pogue, he’s a newspaper writer. His energy was off the scale for an 8:00 am talk – actually it was a performance. One that [...]

Entry #4 – IL-TCE

What a day!
I thought I would spend most of my time today soaking up all the information at as many sessions as I could go to. But, as I began walking to my 3rd session something inside my head clicked … a thought was about to emerge. I was really impressed after hearing what Illinois [...]

Entry #3 – IL-TCE

Great Ending
We finished with fireworks! Blogging, Wiki-ing, and Podcasting, all fun times for us and the co-learners. Each person created a Blogger account – we talked in depth about 21Publish and then about the educational applications. Next was wikis – some of them had contributed to our pre-conference wiki and were familiar with the process. [...]
