Gmail for your students

One of my Twitter friends, Darren Draper, shared on Twitter how to create Gmail accounts for your students without using any of their personal information.

What you need:

  • Your own Gmail account

What to do:

  1. Give each student a pseudonym, a number, or use their first names
  2. Use your Gmail account name, then add each student’s pseudonym/number/name
    • My student’s would be drctedd+student1@gmail.com
    • Yours might be MrsJones+student1@gmail.com

You will receive all the emails sent to the above addresses. So, any time you add “+students pseudonym/number/name” to your gmail email name, you have created a new email for your students and you will get any emails that are sent to that name.

Try it – I did … it works!

I think this is a great idea, especially for students that do not have access to email because of the price. Gmail also has a pretty good SPAM filter, so that is helpful.

This is a great option! Now, I would like Google to allow kids to log on to things like Google Docs using that address.

What happens when the student sends an email? Does it go out only with your gmail info? Can you let them send email?
    Thanks for answering.

Yes – I’d like them to be able to use Google Docs, especially! I think it’s ok for using that email to send or login to something, but not necessarily for reading or collaborating….gaggle or nicenet seems to be the only option for that.

When I tried to make a student account I got this msg: Sorry, only letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), and periods (.) are allowed.

How do I do the + sign??
